Todorov's Theory

Today we learnt all about Todorov's theory.
Todorov's Theory is a set of rules that most films follow in relation to story, structure and tension. Here are the 5 basic stages, in chronological order, and what they mean:

Stage 1: Equilibrium - Setting is established and key characters are introduced; the storyline is set up.

Stage 2: Disruption - Oppositional characters appear. The story takes a particular direction.

Stage 3: Recognition of Disruption - The lives and events of the oppositional characters interweave. Tension builds throughout this section and it is often the longest of the 5 sections.

Stage 4: Attempt to Repair Disruption - This is the highest point of tension and a change in dynamic follows.

Stage 5: Reinstatement of Equilibrium - Matters of the film are sorted out. Problems are solved and questions are answered.

Today we each came up with an idea of what our opening scene could be about. While doing this, we were asked to think not only about the opening scene, but also about how the rest of the film would turn out too. This was because it allowed us to think about our openings in a lot more detail.

My idea for an opening scene was:

Stage 1: A man is released from a mental asylum after serving time for murder. And takes a very uncomfortable walk back to his house

Stage 2: The man notices that nobody remembers who he is or what he has done.

Stage 3: The man goes to the library and looks up the murder that he committed, but the newspaper article he reads identifies the killing as a suicide.

Stage 4: The man goes on a mission to try and find out what has been happening and why nothing is as he remembers it

Stage 5: At the end of the film, we learn that the man was never released from the mental asylum, he has just been moved to a move secure unit because his state of mental health has deteriorated and no one is able to help him anymore.

We are all going to share our ideas in our group and pick the best one.

UPDATE

Today we chose which was the best idea for an opening sequence out of mine, Dom's, Shannon's and Lester's and we all decided that the idea we were going to follow was my idea. I'm very proud of this because usually I am not very creative but my idea was good enough to be chosen so I must be improving!
